ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski first reported the news that the Detroit Pistons have fired head coach Monty Williams after one season. Williams exit comes after after Detroit signed him to a record six-year, $78.5 million contract after he was fired by the Phoenix Suns; the Pistons will now absorb the remainder of his contract worth $65M+

The Pistons confirmed the firing in a statement on social media Wednesday. According to ESPN, recently-hired Pistons president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon had been meeting regularly with Williams, but ultimately the decision to dismiss Williams came from the ownership level with Tom Gores.

Detroit held the worst record in the NBA this past season (14-68), including the longest losing streak in NBA history (28 games). The Pistons are 94-290 (.245) over the past five seasons, also the worst in the league.
