ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Denver Broncos signed cornerback Patrick Surtain II to a record four-year extension worth $96 million overall with $77.5 million in guarantees.

Per NFL Network, the pact makes Surtain the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history; the new deal will begin in 2026 and will keep him under contract in Denver through the 2029 season. The $24 million average annual value of Surtain’s deal is now No. 1 for defensive backs in the NFL (ahead of Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Antoine Winfield Jr. ($21.025 million) and Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander ($21 million)). The $77.5 million guaranteed in Surtain’s contract is also the most for a defensive back contract.

Surtain, 24, was the No. 9 overall pick by the Broncos in the 2021 NFL Draft. The three-year veteran made the Pro Bowl in each of the last two seasons and was an All-Pro in 2022. Last season, the cornerback totaled 69 combined tackles, an interception and 12 passes; and over 50 career appearances he has logged 187 combined tackles, 36 passes defensed, seven interceptions, three tackles for a loss, a forced fumble and a touchdown.

The Denver Broncos open their season on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. EDT against the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field.
